Running long distances

Well today I ran a half marathon just 7 months after having gastric bypass surgery. While many will look at this as a great accomplishment as I do there is something not right. Let me explain, the traditional before race carb loading is not an option. With only being able to eat a minimal amount of food I found myself running out of gas around the 6 mile mark and by 8 miles I was going numb.

What I am looking for is any way to better fuel up for a race of this distance and longer. My goal is to run the Marine Corps Marathon this fall. Now training is under control but my diet is a large concern as I eat very little carbohydrates and lean towards a high protein diet.
